SMITH WESTERNS: “Weekend”

The winners of the Most Underrated Album of 2009 are back with a new glossy sheen. Recently signed to Fat Possum, the trio from Chicago received access to much better equipment, studio time and assistance than they had while recording last year’s self-titled debut. That album, which is absolutely amazing, shares a similar aesthetic with GIRLS, offering a vintage ’60s pop feel that can be easily attributed to guitarist Max Kakacek’s intriguing line crafting. Word on the street was that this record is far more Brit pop influenced. But on the album’s first release Weekend, it seems to be an expanded version of their already signature sound, just shinier. It seems that as long as Kakacek is writing the guitar lines, the boys are gonna sound how they do. Thankfully. Having only recently departed their teens, SMITH WESTERNS are gonna be around for a while, and judging from their short, young catalogue of music, we are all the better for it.
